The Right Choice of Down

Choose the right duvet - for a better night's sleep

Your duvet plays a crucial role in the quality of your sleep. Not only should it be soft and comfortable, it should also match your temperature, insulation and seasonal needs. At Illums Bolighus, we help you find the right duvet so you wake up well-rested - every morning.

When choosing a duvet, it's important to know the fill power - a measure of the insulation and quality of the down. The higher the fill power, the better the duvet retains heat without feeling heavy.

  • High fill power (e.g. 12-16): Excellent insulation. Perfect for those who feel cold at night.
  • Medium fill power: Provides balanced warmth - suitable as a year-round duvet.
  • Low fill power: Light insulation - ideal as a summer duvet for warm bedrooms.

Do you sweat or feel cold at night?

Your choice of duvet should be based on your body temperature and sleeping space.

  • If you're cold: Choose a winter duvet with high fill power and high fill volume to keep you warm throughout the night.
  • For those who are hot: A cool summer duvet with lower fill power provides good ventilation and a lightweight feel.

Find the right duvet type

Summer duvet: Light and cool with low fill volume. Suitable for warm nights or for those who get hot quickly.

All-year duvet: Balanced fill and insulation. Suitable for most temperatures and needs.

Winter duvet: Extra warm with high fill power and high fill volume. Perfect for those who sleep in a chilly room or get cold easily.

Don't compromise on your sleep

At Illums Bolighus we sell carefully selected duvets with quality down and high fill power. Whether you're looking for luxury, lightness or warmth, we'll help you find the right duvet for your needs - so you can sleep soundly and wake up refreshed

Filling Types

Find your ideal duvet - choose between musk down, goose down, duck down or Fossflakes

Musk down - luxury and temperature regulation

The musk down duvet is a light and luxurious quality duvet with high loft and excellent insulation. The down has a natural ability to regulate temperature according to body heat, making it ideal for those who feel warm at night - without feeling heavy.

Benefits:

  • High carrying capacity and excellent thermal insulation
  • Light and airy feel
  • Suitable for those who sweat easily at night

Duck down - the cool summer friend

Duck down duvets are typically cooler and lighter and therefore suitable for warm bedrooms or as a summer duvet. The down has a lower loft than musk and goose down, for example, but still provides good volume and comfort.

Benefits:

  • Cool duvet, perfect for summer or warm nights
  • Plump despite lower fill power
  • Look for Danish-produced duvets for correct labelling

Goose down - warmth, lightness and exclusive comfort

The Goose down duvet is a popular classic with large, fluffy down for high carrying capacity and effective insulation - without being heavy. It moulds to the body, creating a soft, warm and fluffy sleep experience.

Benefits:

  • Very high fill power
  • Requires less filling for optimal warmth
  • Feels light and moulds to the body

Fossflakes - the hypoallergenic alternative

Fossflakes is a synthetic alternative to down that is both hypoallergenic and temperature regulating. The filling consists of small flakes designed to mimic the feel of down - and it keeps its volume night after night.

Benefits:

  • Ideal choice for allergy sufferers
  • Good heat balance throughout the night
  • Only requires daily refreshment with a few light shakes

Which duvet is best for you?

When choosing a duvet, it's about more than just comfort - it's about sleep quality. Always consider: Do you feel hot or cold at night? Is the duvet for year-round use or for a specific season?

Down Care

How to care for your duvets and pillows for longer life and optimal comfort

For your duvets and pillows to retain their fullness, softness and shape, proper everyday care is essential. A simple and effective method is to shake your duvets and pillows daily so that the filling stays fluffy and doesn't clump together. It's important to avoid vacuuming or beating them, as this can damage the filling and shorten their lifespan.

When changing bed linen, you should flip the duvet to distribute the wear evenly, as the head end usually wears more than the foot end. Using a bedspread can prevent moisture from escaping, which can cause the filling to lose its fluffiness and become flatter. To refresh the filling, you can tumble dry your duvets and pillows. Down products can be tumble dried for a few hours with tennis balls to help loosen and distribute the down. Products with Fossflakes or Kapok are recommended to be tumble dried without tennis balls to protect the filling.

Washing down duvets and pillows

It is only recommended to wash your duvet if there is visible dirt or stains. Minor stains can often be removed with a firmly wrung sponge without a full wash. Frequent washing wears down the natural properties of down, so avoid this to preserve the quality and lifespan of your duvet.

When washing, use a washing machine with a minimum capacity of 7kg and wash the duvet separately or together with a maximum of one pillow. Always wash at 60 degrees on a gentle programme with an enzyme-free detergent, e.g. for wool. Avoid detergents with enzymes and fabric softeners as these destroy the down's natural fat layer and thus its insulating properties. Before washing, check that the seams are intact to avoid damage.

To make sure your duvet and pillow are completely dry after washing, weigh them before and after. If the weight is the same, the products are ready for use.

Washing Fossflakes products

Fossflakes products are washed at a maximum of 60 degrees without enzymatic detergents and fabric softeners to preserve the quality of the filling. For drying, a gentle programme such as silk or wool programme with low heat is recommended. Tennis balls are not necessary, but it is important to remove the product immediately after drying as the after-heat can damage the filling. For optimal hygiene, washing Fossflakes products is recommended approximately every three months.

Pillows

PILLOWS

The height of the pillow reflects the amount of down, and it's crucial to choose a pillow that suits your individual needs. The wrong pillow can lead to discomfort such as headaches, neck and shoulder pain. Therefore, you should consider both the amount of filling and how you sleep.

A 3-layer pillow consists of three chambers with different fillings. The centre chamber is filled with down and small feathers with low load-bearing capacity, which provides good support for the head and neck. The two outer chambers contain fine, soft down with high fill power to ensure the pillow feels soft and comfortable. This type of pillow is especially recommended for back or side sleepers as it provides better support and comfort.

However, if you prefer a lower pillow and often sleep on your stomach, a 1-layer pillow can be a good choice. It's simpler in construction and provides a lower profile, which many find comfortable in this sleeping position.
