Wood Care
Oiled wood
Oiled wood is loved for its warm, natural surface and the way it emphasises the structure and grain of the wood. It gives a vibrant, tactile look that patinates beautifully over time - but it requires regular care to maintain both appearance and durability.
What does oil do for wood?
Oil does not completely protect the wood, but acts as a natural barrier against dirt, moisture and drying out. Oil care keeps the wood supple and extends its lifespan - and over time, oiled wood develops a beautiful, authentic patina.
How often should oiled wood be treated?
We recommend oiling the wood 1-2 times a year, depending on how much it is used and how it looks. Signs that it's time for a new treatment can be:
- A dull, dry or faded surface
- Wood that feels rough or porous
Step-by-step guide to oiling wood
- Clean the wood thoroughly. Use a cloth wrung out with lukewarm water - preferably with acid-free soap flakes - to remove dirt and dust. Let the wood dry for at least one hour.
- Sand gently if necessary. If the wood fibres rise after washing, sand carefully with sandpaper (240 grit) - always along the length of the wood.
- Apply the oil correctly. Use a dry cloth and apply oil along the grain - never directly from the bottle onto the wood. Remember to treat the edges and underside to avoid tension in the wood.
- Let the oil soak in for 15 minutes. Then wipe off excess oil with a dry, lint-free cloth, still in the direction of the wood.
- Let the wood dry for at least 12 hours. Before applying it again.
Safety first: oil rags can self-ignite
Always put used oil rags in a closed metal container with a little water - and dispose of them as flammable waste. This is important for your safety and to avoid fire hazards.

Soap-treated wood
Soap-treated wood has a unique, light and matt look that gives a natural and exclusive finish. It appears light and silky smooth, and with proper care, the wood develops a beautiful and even patina over time. However, as soap grease is water-soluble, soap-treated surfaces require regular maintenance.
Gentle cleaning before soap treatment
Before applying soap, remove dirt and any stains with a fine sanding sponge or sandpaper (240 grit). Sand lightly and never against the grain - this ensures a uniform and harmonious look. Always avoid cleaning agents and chemicals as they can damage the open, delicate surface of the wood.
How to soap treat your wooden furniture - step by step
- Make the soap mixture correctly
- Dissolve the soap in boiled water and let it cool down to max. 20°C before use. This protects the wood and ensures optimal absorption.
- Apply the soap evenly and slowly
- Using a sponge or soft cloth, apply the soap liberally along the grain of the wood. Let the soap soak for 3-5 minutes. If it dries in the process, add more soap - not water.
- Wipe away excess soap
- Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove excess soap - and make sure the wood is never left wet.
Important: Never pour the soapy water directly over the furniture. Wood cannot tolerate large amounts of water - only soap grease. Too much water can cause cracks during drying and damage the fine wood.
How often should soap treatment be carried out?
It depends on usage - but as a rule of thumb, it is recommended to treat soap-treated surfaces every 1-2 months or when the surface starts to appear dry and rough.
